This beatiful clock tower, called as "Izmir Saatkulesi (means clocktower in Turkish)" was built as a memorial for 25th years of Sultan Abdulhamid, Ottoman Empire by Küçük Sait Paşa who is Sultan's Sadrazam (a kind of prime minister in the Ottoman Empire age) in 1901. The clock in the tower was given as a present to Izmir by German Kaiser 2nd Wilhelm. Today the clock tower is known as the symbol of Izmir city and its municipality. It has drinking taps on its four sides at the base. |
