Ellaiussa-Sebaste, today called Ayaş, is an ancient port city which has typical characteristics of late Hellenistic plus Roman cultures together. It is located in the west of Mersin city center, and nearly 70 kilometers away from Mersin. It has an amphithaetre, Roman port bath, agora, basillicas, necropols and many other city facilities. "Its development and prosperity are due to its ultimate geographic position and its particular configuration. The primitive nucleus of the city, which was founded in the Late Hellenistic Age (2nd-1st century BC), was naturally defended because it rose up on a large rocky spur stretching out to the sea. Literary sources mention this rock spur as an island, but in antiquity it was connected to dry land by a thin stretch of land closed in between to large natural gulfs. " ...
